Yoga

We don't use the body to get in to the pose, we use the pose to get in to the body...

My love of Yoga began many years ago and I remember I had a Barbara Currie video that I used to play and follow along to. After a while I began to attend the odd class, but I never really found a style or teacher that i totally resonated with. I was never in to the Yang practice of strong Ashtanga Yoga or powerful flow style and was always happiest when we were practicing floor postures and was always reticent to get off the floor. (although i now adore the Warrior postures!) We live in a very Yang culture and i feel everyone could benefit from some Yin time.

It was when i found Yin Yoga that i truly felt i had found my practice. Based on the floor and not focusing on the muscles, it was challenging but in a completely different way. We were holding postures for up to 5 minutes at a time and were using props such as bolsters, cushions and blocks to ensure we could ease ourselves to a place of stillness, feel sensations in the targeted area/s and then stay. I loved that during the 5 minutes we were still, the body would sometimes open up a little more to allow us to go deeper and you could feel the tissues and fascia melting. It really felt as though you were allowing the body to open,

in a fully supported practice with no effort required, just a willingness to let go.

The idea of actually teaching Yoga had been swirling round in my head for a few years, but i was never certain i was good enough! I now realise this has nothing to do with it. Its about having a passion for the practice and understanding that the posture (Asana) practice is just one small part and makes up one of the Eight Limbs of Yoga. It took me until about 7 years ago to understand that side and to get it out of my head that it wasn't about wearing the perfect outfit or being able to do the perfect posture! There is no such thing! If you go in to a class today, you will see that everyone looks different in every posture, because we are all unique! Yin Yoga is the same and another reason why the use of props such as bolsters and blocks are actively encouraged, to allow us to find OUR own unique shape. My aim as with all my other treatments is to provide you with a calm and safe space to explore this practice in your own way with 1-1 guidance. There is no requirement to have ever practised any style of Yoga before, you certainly do not need to be 'flexible!' and comfy clothes even PJ's are warmly encouraged!

If you have any questions regarding these practices then please do get in touch.

Yin Yoga - 60 minutes

I really love to use the word 'marinating' for this particular style of Yoga. Essentially that is what i feel we are doing as we sit or recline in stillness whilst all these amazing things are happening inside us! It is a passive and allowing practice. It is about feeling our way in to a posture and not what we look like in it.

With each posture we aim for gentle sensations creating tension in certain parts of the body which could be the hips, lower back or legs. It's about finding our appropriate edge, becoming still and then staying for an amount of time which could be anything from 1 minute to 5 minutes in most cases but can differ depending on the posture and the student.

With Yin, we are not targeting the muscles of the body, we want them to relax as much as possible to allow connection with the ligaments and soft tissue. The use of blocks, bolsters and blankets is actively encouraged to allow you to find YOUR posture where you feel you could stay for an amount of time.
